October 07 | Maldives
are tranquil again |
The recent bombing in the
Maldives capital, Male has had little affect on tourism
announced the Maldives tourism officials.
Isolated incident
It is claimed to be an isolated incident in the normally
tranquil holiday destination as it is the first terrorist attack
on the country.
Leading worldwide tour operators have also said that there has
been no noticeable cancellations or lower number of bookings to
the destination. Hameed Zakariyya, the Maldives deputy
minister for tourism said that it would be business as usual.
"Given the Maldives' unique geographical layout of one
resort per island, it is highly unlikely that tourism to the
country will suffer.", he said.
"The capital remains calm and in all resorts the pace of
life continues to remain tranquil. This is the first incident of
its kind in the history of the Maldives and we see this as an
isolated incident." said Mr Zakariyya.
No cancellations
A spokesman for the worldwide holiday specialists, Kuoni also
has said that there have been no cancellations or tourists
wanting to come home early since the incident.
"Travellers are more resilient than in the past to
international incidents such as this, so we are optimistic that
tourism will continue as normal", they said.
The Foreign Office are in close contact with the Maldivian
authorities and are monitoring the situation closely.
