Airport not to be named after Robert Burns |
The owners of Prestwick Airport
have turned down a proposal for it to be renamed after
Scotland's famous bard Robert Burns.
With the famous poets 250th birthday coming up in January, there
had been calls from the Scottish Government to honor Robert
Burns by branding Glasgow's 2nd largest airport after him.
The airports chief executive Mark Rodwell told the Daily Record that it would
just confuse tourists.
"We appreciate Robert Burns
has a hugely important Ayrshire and Scottish identity and has
followers around the world. However, like most airports, we rely on the location name
to attract the vast majority of our customers. Glasgow Prestwick is the right name for this airport given
that it is in Prestwick and its closest major city is Glasgow. Visitors may not instantly connect with or geographically
place a Robert Burns brand.", he said.
Despite the fact the airport name is not to be changed,
Homecoming Scotland 2009 in honor of Robert Burns is expected to
attract millions of visitors to many events across the country.
