BAA
to cut over 10% of jobs
|
Fears have been expressed regarding the
seven airports owned by the British Airport Authority (BAA) as they are
reported to be cutting upto 1,000 which is over 10% of their entire
workforce.
The BAA employs 13,000 people in Britain at Heathrow, Gatwick, Stansted,
Edinburgh, Glasgow, Aberdeen and Southampton airports. They have
stated that their is no final numbers on how many jobs would be lost,
but a spokesman for the BAA has said the jobs that are to be cut will be
from the support staff in areas like IT, human resources and marketing.
Efficiency savings
The spokesman said "We will be making efficiency savings from
the back office staff of BAA and increasing them in frontline
areas," he said. "There is no final number. This is a
simplification exercise aimed at support staff much more than frontline
staff. It's not simply about costs. Employees are aware that this is an
ongoing process."
Shamed
Airports owned by the BAA have come under heavy criticism lately,
especially London's main airport Heathrow. Ken Livingstone, the
mayor of London has recently said that Heathrow 'shamed' London.
Tony Douglas who recently retired as Heathrow's chief executive claimed
the airport was bursting at the seams and held together by sticking
plaster.
Passengers have become increasingly frustrated recently with growing
delays at airports due to the extra security needed, and this news will
not help to boost passenger confidence.
