Over 150 campaigners at Heathrow
decided to set up camp on Sunday for the week long protests about the
climate directed at British Airport Authority (BAA) due to start on
Tuesday.
The group behind it is the Camp for Climate Change, they have set up a
camp within 1km of Heathrow for a week of talks and peaceful protest
against the BAA and its plans to build a third runway.
With the main holiday season well under way there are fears that many
people will be disrupted causing problems and delays.
In an interview with the BBC a spokeswoman from the Camp for Climate
Change, Gemma Davis said, "We're not here to try to disrupt
passengers; we're here to try to disrupt BAA," She added
"climate change is the biggest issue going. If we don't take action
now on climate change then we're really facing an enormous
catastrophe,".
The first few days of the camp will just be talks and workshops leading
upto the 24 hour direct action protest on Sunday which is reported to
include protesters chaining themselves to vehicles and railings plus sit
down road protests.
