17 Brits injured by falling ice on arctic cruise

A falling ice glacier hit the arctic cruise ship 'Alexey Maryshev' while cruising around the Svalbard islands which is 300 miles north of Norway.

The cruiser which is owned by the specialist tour operator Discover the World was rocked by falling ice as it was sailing past a large glacier.  Many of the passengers were also hit by the ice and some suffered broken limbs and bruised ribs although none of the injuries are thankfully life threatening.

Police are investigating whether the cruise ship was sailing too close to the glacier, although a spokesman from Discover the World said it had given strict instructions to the captain on how close it was to safely be to the glaciers.

UK residents that need further information on friends or family that were on the ship can contact Discover the World on Tel - 01737 214204 or 07793 267510.
