Airlines forced to financially protect customers
|
Scheduled airlines including no-frills
carriers could be forced to financially protect their customers
following a vote in the European Parliament.
The parliament largely supported calls
for airlines to be required to offer financial protection for all
passengers, bringing them into line with tour operators.
It also backed calls to force them to
offer inclusive prices and stop variable pricing for different markets,
however these proposals have to be ratified by European transport
ministers, which could take up to a year.
A brief statement from European trade
association Ectaa said the parliament had rejected one small part of an
amendment on the breakdown of taxes and fees.
But it added: “In principle, the
other amendments submitted by the TRAN Committee have been adopted by
the European Parliament (notably on passenger protection against airline
failure, inclusive air fares, access to air fares across the EU, the
scope of application of the rules on transparent and non-discriminatory
air fares and on sanctions in case of non-compliance).”
