The plans for a 3rd runway at Heathrow are up in the air after campaigners have won a High Court battle.
Leader of Hillingdon Council described the ruling as a "crushing defeat for the government",
Judge Lord Justice Carnwath upheld the protesters arguments that Whitehall's support for a
3rd runway would need to be examined again which will delay the potential
expansion for some time.
The verdict called for a review of all the issues surrounding the runway, including climate change targets, which the protestors believe will be seriously undermined if it goes
ahead.
The government originally outlined its plans for Heathrow in a 2003 White Paper, describing the expansion as vital to Britain's economic
development.
