Rome's historic centre is fairly compact and although walking everywhere
would be over ambitious, discovering the city on foot is certainly the
preferable way of getting around.
When distances are too great, take the public bus or tram. Although
there is a Metro system, this is predominately to connect the suburbs
with the centre.
