and wealth of interests.
Its history is evident in the different districts, each with their own
character. There is the Madrid of the Bourbon Kings of the Houses of
Austria, Goya's Madrid, the Prado Museum, one of the world's fines art
galleries, the exceptional Thyssen collection of old masters, the Royal
Palace, and the great Plaza Mayor in the charming old quarter.
Madrid
Spain
See the billowing fountains, the great boulevards and squares with their
fine shops, or take a boat ride on Retiro Park's lake for peace and
relaxation.
In the evening there are lively bars, excellent restaurants, theatres
and unending nightlife.
The Spanish eat late, so have a pre dinner nap if you want to dine with
the locals. Head for the exclusive Salamanca area for tapas bars that
serve an excellent range of these little snacks, or sample traditional
restaurants near the Plaza Mayor or between the Gran Via and Puerta del
Sol, both also noted for their excellent range of shops and boutiques.
